Marquez on pole at Phillip Island, Miller fifth

MotoGP world champion Marc Marquez has stormed to a dominant pole position in a wet-dry qualifying session at Phillip Island on Saturday.

The 23-year-old was the first rider to venture onto the full slick tyres and was untouchable, eventually finishing with a time of 1.30.189 -- almost a full second faster than second-placed man Cal Crutchlow.

Australian hope Jack Miller looked set for a stunning front row start after finding himself third fastest at the chequered flag before being relegated down to fifth by Pol and Aleix Espargaro. The Ducati of Danilo Petrucci will start sixth ahead of Nicky Hayden's Honda.

Valentino Rossi was the big surprise and will start 15th after failing to qualify for Q2. Teammate Jorge Lorenzo didn't fare much better and will line-up 12th after struggling for confidence.

The 2016 Australian motorcycle grand prix gets underway at 4pm AEST on Sunday.
