Jack Miller has posted his first MotoGP race victory, the Queenslander winning a dramatic Dutch Grand Grand Prix to become the 12th Australian motorcycle rider, and the first since two-time world champion Casey Stoner in 2012, to salute in the premier class.
Three riders crashed out of the lead in the rain-affected race, which also saw a red-flag restart after monsoon-like conditions swept across the circuit, and the Australian, 21, took full advantage, barely one day after re-signing to ride for Marc VDS Racing in 2017, to claim the first victory by a non-factory rider since 2006.
Two-time world champion Marc Marquez assumed the lead when Rossi crashed out, but Miller, whose best previous finish was his10th place in Barcelona three weeks before, soon passed the series leader.
Miller, the Moto3 series runner-up in 2014, completed the remaining seven laps of the 12-lap restarted race without issue and took the chequered flag with a standing wheelie across the line.
Marquez finished second with Scott Redding third for the second time in his career. Jorge Lorenzo, second in the championship, carefully nursed his Yamaha around the wet track to finish 10th.
"I don't know what to feel at the moment," Miller said immediately after taking the chequered flag.
"A lot of people have badmouthed us and said the project wouldn't work.
"I just hope we've showed them wrong, and that we can ride a bike and that I'm not an idiot.
"Thank you Honda for taking this risk on me."
Before the race was stopped, riders largely managed to stay on board their bikes despite starting on a wet track; but conditions after the restart caused carnage among the leaders.
The three riders on the front row for the 12-lap sprint - Andrea Dovizioso, Rossi and Danilo Petrucci - all fell and failed to finish.
The Moto2 race was cut short by two laps because of the rain, with Takaaki Nakagami on his Honda profiting from the red flag to take his first win ahead of Johann Zarco of France.

Francesco Bagnaia won his first Moto3 race in a photo finish, registering the first victory for his Aspar Mahindra team.
