If Georges St-Pierre fights again, Dana White says it won't be against Conor McGregor

LAS VEGAS -- UFC president Dana White says "there is no status" on Georges St-Pierre's future, following his recent decision to vacate the UFC's middleweight championship.

St-Pierre, 36, claimed the 185-pound title by submitting Michael Bisping at UFC 217 in early November. It was St-Pierre's first fight since 2013.

The Canadian star vacated the title just 31 days later, citing health reasons. Prior to that announcement, White stated he would be "super pissed" if St-Pierre refused to defend the title, and that he was contractually obligated to do so.

St-Pierre (26-2) still opted to vacate, but remains under UFC contract and is open to fighting again.

At this time, White said there is no update on his next move.

"There is no status," White told ESPN. "I knew what he was doing. That's why I put [a mandatory title defense] into his contract. We both knew what was going on.

"I don't know, man. I don't think the guy wants to fight. I think he jumped in, grabbed some cash and went back to Canada."

There has been plenty of speculation that St-Pierre's eyes are on a lucrative fight against lightweight champion Conor McGregor.

In October, St-Pierre told ESPN it would be "an amazing honor" to fight McGregor (21-3), but he would not call out a smaller fighter. McGregor's optimal fight weight is arguably 155 pounds. St-Pierre has fought primarily at 170 pounds.

This month, however, St-Pierre's longtime coach, Firas Zahabi, told Express Sport a fight between the two international stars would be "brilliant" and "probably the biggest fight in UFC and MMA history."

When asked if he believes that is St-Pierre's intent after vacating the middleweight title, White shot down the potential matchup.

"He ain't fighting Conor McGregor," White said. "If he wants to come back, [UFC welterweight champion] Tyron Woodley or [middleweight champion] Robert Whittaker is waiting for him. They're both waiting, if Georges wants to come back."

The UFC's middleweight division will move on in February, when newly crowned champion Whittaker meets Luke Rockhold at UFC 221.

McGregor hasn't fought since he made his professional boxing debut against Floyd Mayweather in August.
