Red Sox LHP Chris Sale hospitalized for stomach illness

MLB, Boston Red Sox, Houston Astros

BOSTON -- Red Sox starter Chris Sale was admitted to a hospital Sunday afternoon because of a stomach illness, the team said.

"He's at the hospital. From what I know, it is nothing serious," manager Alex Cora said. "Whenever you have to go to hospital, you have to be quote-unquote 'worried.' But he should be fine."

The left-handed pitcher went to Massachusetts General Hospital for observation. According to the Red Sox, he'll be kept there overnight for further evaluation. The team said during its 7-5 Game 2 American League Championship Series win over the Houston Astros that it would provide updates when they were available.

"Hopefully we'll get news in the upcoming hours and he'll join us in Houston," Cora said.

The ALCS shifts venues Tuesday, with Game 3 being played at the Astros' Minute Maid Park. Boston will pitch Nathan Eovaldi, while Houston will counter with lefty Dallas Keuchel.

Sale pitched in Saturday's ALCS opener. He lasted four innings, giving up one hit and two runs. He also walked four in Boston's 7-2 loss.

Sale's stomach illness didn't affect his outing, Cora said. It was sometime after the start that he started feeling sick, the manager added.
