BOSTON -- The Boston Red Sox placed third baseman Rafael Devers on the 10-day disabled list with left shoulder inflammation.
Devers said the shoulder has been bothering for almost a month, since a game against the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Park when he had to dive back to first after a line out.
"Seattle was initially when I started feeling some slight discomfort," Devers said Thursday. "But I didn't say anything. I just kept playing through it and it progressively got worse.
"I wanted to keep playing to help the team. But then eventually it got just to a point where I asked the trainers what they thought. They suggested it would be best to take some time."'
Devers, who sat out Wednesday's game, had an MRI, which showed the inflammation. Devers said the shoulder bothers him both when he is batting and when he is in the field.
The move was retroactive to Wednesday, meaning Devers would be eligible to return by the second game after the All-Star break, July 21 against the Tigers in Detroit.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said he was hopeful that Devers could return during the Tigers series.
Infielder Tzu-Wei Lin was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket to replace Devers on the roster.
Lin is batting .162 in 16 games over two call-ups to the majors this season. He was batting.308 with five homers at Pawtucket.
Devers was batting .241 with 14 homers and 48 RBIs this season, his first full year in the majors.
Eduardo Nunez will play third Thursday night against the Toronto Blue Jays, as the Red Sox try for their 10th straight win.
