Coach Matthew Graves out at South Alabama

South Alabama Jaguars

South Alabama has parted ways with head coach Matthew Graves after five seasons, the school announced Thursday.

Graves, 43, was 51-78 heading into this season, and the Jaguars went 14-18 in 2017-18. Graves failed to finish above .500 in any of his five seasons at the helm and never finished above sixth place in the Sun Belt.

"I met with Matthew this afternoon and have informed him that I am going to make a change," AD Joel Erdmann said in a statement. "I have a great deal of appreciation and respect for Matthew and his service to our university over the past five years, and wish him and his staff the best moving forward."

Prior to taking over at South Alabama in 2013, Graves was a longtime assistant at Butler. He began with the Bulldogs in 2000 and was promoted to associate head coach under Brad Stevens in 2010.
