URI's Stanford Robinson faces charges in arena disturbance

SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. -- A University of Rhode Island men's basketball player is facing charges in connection with a September disturbance at an arena that led to the arrest of the team's assistant coach.

A university spokesman says senior guard Stanford Robinson appeared in court Friday on misdemeanor counts of disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and simple assault.

The charges stem from a reported altercation in a men's bathroom at the Ryan Center. South Kingstown police allege Robinson hit an officer and was acting aggressively. Police say assistant coach Tyron Boswell tried to intervene on Robinson's behalf.

Robinson is due in court Nov. 16. It's unclear if he has an attorney.

Boswell pleaded no contest to disorderly conduct last month.

The university said Monday it won't comment further until the case is resolved.
