South Florida hires Brian Gregory as new coach

South Florida has hired Brian Gregory as its new head coach, the school announced Tuesday.

The Bulls have given Gregory a six-year contract, sources told ESPN.

"I am very excited to get to work, to talk with the players and to meet Bulls Nation and the Bay Area community," Gregory said in a statement.

Gregory, 50, was the head coach at Dayton for eight seasons and then Georgia Tech for five before being fired after last season. He spent the 2016-17 season as a consultant to Tom Izzo at Michigan State.

"Brian brings vast head coaching experience to USF, a passion for coaching and mentoring student-athletes and a track record of leading successful programs," athletic director Mark Harlan said in a statement. "He has been a part of championship winning programs as a player, assistant coach and head coach and has built a very strong reputation as a tireless recruiter, skilled tactician and a coach who cares deeply about his players and graduating them. Brian will lead USF men's basketball to a very exciting future."

Gregory made two NCAA tournament appearances at Dayton, also playing in the NIT on three occasions. He finished above .500 just once at Georgia Tech, going to the NIT quarterfinals in 2015-16.

He replaces Orlando Antigua, who was fired in January after two and a half seasons. The Bulls were 6-7 when Antigua was let go and finished 7-23 under interim coach Murry Bartow.

ESPN reported in July that the South Florida program was being investigated for academic fraud. Antigua's brother Oliver resigned as an assistant coach shortly after.
