Matt Brady out as James Madison coach after 21-win season

Men's College Basketball, James Madison Dukes

James Madison has parted ways with coach Matt Brady despite the Dukes' 21-win season, the school announced Monday.

Brady, 50, has been with the Dukes for eight seasons. He was 118-116 heading into 2015-16 and went 21-11 this past season.

"We are grateful to Matt Brady and his staff for their commitment to our program over the last eight years," JMU athletic director Jeff Bourne said in a statement. "He helped us to recover from a long period of drought for JMU men's basketball and had multiple accomplishments.

"That said, when I met with Matt, we agreed that it was time for both parties to move in a different direction. We hold our coaches to high standards of success both on and off the court. Success is ultimately judged by postseason performance, and we have not advanced past the CAA quarterfinals in seven of eight years. Despite winning records on the court, home attendance has declined."

Brady coached the Dukes to the NCAA tournament in 2013 and won a share of the CAA regular-season title in 2015. He won 21 games in four of his eight seasons with James Madison.

Prior to taking over in 2008, Brady spent four seasons as the head coach at Marist. He also has been an assistant at Saint Joseph's, Wagner and Rhode Island.
