Jackson State beats Alabama State 82-73 in SWAC opener

JACKSON, Miss. -- Jeremiah Jefferson scored 21 points, Paris Collins had 16 points, 12 rebounds and five assists for his second double-double of the season, and Jackson State beat Alabama State 82-73 on Monday night in a Southwestern Athletic Conference opener.

Jefferson and Collins each made three of Jackson State's 11 3-pointers. Jefferson was 9 of 14 from the floor for his third 20-plus game of the season and Collins made 4 of 12 as the Tigers shot 46 percent overall.

Julian Daughtry also scored 16 points for Jackson State (4-10), which had lost six of its last seven games. Treshawn Bolden added 12 points.

Freshman Jacoby Ross scored 18 points on 5-of-13 shooting for Alabama State (0-13), which played its 10th road game. Ed Jones and Reginald Gee each added 12 points. The Hornets were just 3 of 15 from distance.
