Shorts sprints to push UC Davis past UC Riverside 64-63

DAVIS, Calif. -- TJ Shorts II scored 16 points, and ran from baseline to baseline to make the game-winning layup with a second left and give UC Davis a 64-63 victory over UC Riverside on Saturday night.

UC Davis (19-9, 10-4 Big West Conference) has won three straight games. UC Riverside (8-19, 3-10 Big West Conference) has lost two of its last three.

Menno Dijkstra's 3-pointer gave UC Riverside its first lead of the second half, 63-62 with seven seconds remaining. Shorts then threw the inbounds pass to a teammate, took the ball back around midcourt while at a full sprint, and split three defenders in the paint and banked in his shot for the final score.

Chance Murray scored 24 points to lead UC Riverside.

UC Davis had a 10-point halftime lead. Brandon Rosser made a layup for the Highlanders to tie it at 60 with 1:46 left. Shorts made a pair of free throws before Dijkstra's late 3.
