Thomas, Hawaii overcome cold shooting, beat Cal Poly 57-45

Men's College Basketball, Hawai'i Rainbow Warriors, Cal Poly Mustangs

HONOLULU -- Mike Thomas had 22 points and 11 rebounds -- his second consecutive double-double -- to help Hawaii overcome a poor-shooting performance and beat Cal Poly 57-45 on Wednesday night.

Sheriff Drammeh added 13 points, including three 3-pointers, for Hawaii (11-5, 2-1 Big West). The Rainbow Warriors tied their season low with 17 made field goals on 42 attempts (40.5 percent) and hit just 16-of-28 (57 percent) free throws.

Thomas scored the first four points in a 7-0 spurt that gave Hawaii its biggest lead, 56-43, with 45 seconds left.

Gibson Johnson hit a 3-pointer -- his third of the season -- to make it 7-0 and Hawaii never trailed. The Rainbow Warriors went nearly six minutes without a field goal, and committed five turnovers during that span, and a 3-point play by Cal Poly's Victor Joseph made it 21-all before Hawaii took a six-point lead into the break.

Joseph led Cal Poly (6-11, 1-2) with 11 points. The Mustangs, who came in shooting 48.2 percent (27 of 56) from 3-point range in conference play, made just 3 of 19 (15.8) percent against Hawaii.

It was Cal Poly's lowest scoring output of the season

Through three conference games, Hawaii has allowed its opponents to shoot a combined 15.9 percent (7 of 44) from behind the arc.
