Cooks, Broman help Winthrop defeat Charleston Southern 64-53

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Xavier Cooks and Bjorn Broman scored the final four points at the free-throw line, Cooks finishing with 15 points and Broman 12 as Winthrop defeated Charleston Southern 64-53 Friday night, ending a three-game slide.

Winthrop (8-8, 2/3 Big South) trailed by 10 midway through the first half but launched a 27-6 run over eight minutes for a 32-21 halftime lead. The Eagles pushed the lead to 18 midway through the second half.

Cooks made 5 of 8 field-goal attempts, 5 of 7 free throws and grabbed eight rebounds. Broman was 4 of 7 from the floor, all 3-pointers as the Eagles landed seven 3s in the first half in 15 tries. Winthrop finished 11 of 25 from distance with Austin Awad making three and scoring nine points.

Josh Ferguson hauled in 13 rebounds as Winthrop controlled the glass 45-27 on Charleston Southern, which is one of the Big South's top rebounding teams.

The Buccaneers (6-10, 1-4) have lost their last four. Travis McConico led with 11 points. The Bucs attempted just three free throws, making one.
