Morgan scores 25 to lead Cornell past Longwood 69-62

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Matt Morgan scored 25 points and Stone Gettings added 11 points and eight rebounds to power Cornell to a 69-62 victory over Longwood on Saturday.

Morgan scored in double figures for the 31st straight game for the Big Red (4-4). He is closing in on the Cornell record of 34 set by John Sheehy from 1953-55. Morgan, the two-time defending Ivy League scoring champ who came into the game averaging 22.9 points per game, has been a model of consistency this season. The junior guard has scored between 23 and 26 points in his last seven games.

Kamil Chapman led the Lancers (3-8) with 13 points, while JaShaun Smith scored 12 and B.K. Ashe contributed 10 points and nine rebounds.

Morgan scored 10 of Cornell's final 12 points of the first half and the Big Red led 37-30 at intermission. Morgan's layup and Jack Gordon's 3-pointer to open the second half pushed the lead to double digits. Longwood pulled within 60-57 on two Damarion Geter free throws with 4:01 left to play, but Gordon buried a 3 and Josh Warren scored on a layup to put the Big Red up 65-57. The Lancers pulled within 65-62 on a Geter layup with 35 seconds left, but would get no closer.
