Lyles, Maura lead UMBC to 89-62 win over UMass Lowell

LOWELL, Mass. -- Jarius Lyles scored 21 points and K.J. Maura added 17 on 6-of-7 shooting, including 5 of 6 from 3-point range, to help Maryland-Baltimore County beat UMass Lowell 89-62 on Saturday.

Joe Sherburne also hit 5-of-6 3-pointers and finished with 15 points and Arkel Lamar scored 14 for UMBC (12-7, 3-1 America East). The Retrievers shot 58 percent (33 of 57) from the field, including 64 percent (16 of 25) from behind the arc -- both season highs.

Lamar, Maura and Lyles combined to hit four 3s as UMBC opened a 10-point lead fewer than seven minutes in and Sherburne added another in a 7-0 spurt that made it 27-12 midway through the half. UMass Lowell, which never led, trailed by double figures the rest of the way.

Jahad Thomas had 15 points, nine rebounds and six assists for the River Hawks (6-10, 0-3). UMass Lowell has lost five in a row overall and three straight against the Retrievers.
