Northeastern hangs on after big first half, beats Elon 72-60

BOSTON -- Vasa Pusica had four 3-pointers and 20 points on Friday night and Northeastern built a 25-point lead in the first half and then held on to beat Elon 72-60.

Elon rallied with a 9-0 run to get within 64-60 on Steven Santa Ana's steal and layup with 46 seconds left. But Northeastern made all six of its final free throws and Shawn Occeus punctuated the final moments with a breakaway two-handed dunk

The Huskies (9-6, 2-1 Colonial Athletic Association) had their largest lead at 37-12 on Pusica's 3-pointer with 2:14 left in the first half and went into the break ahead 39-18.

The Phoenix (10-6, 2-1) had already cut the deficit to 49-45 near the midpoint of the second half, but Northeastern surged back to 64-51 lead on Pusica's 3-pointer with 3:55 left.

Devon Begley added 12 points and Maxime Boursiquot scored 10 for the Huskies.

Dmitri Thompson led the Phoenix with 19 and Tyler Seibring added 17.
