Robinson, Berry lead Rhode Island to an 84-60 win in opener

KINGSTON, R.I. -- Stanford Robinson had 18 points and Andre Berry added 15 as Rhode Island opened the season with an 84-60 win over UNC Asheville on Friday night.

The Rams won before the largest opening night crowd in the history of the Ryan Center with 6,367 in attendance.

Robinson was 7 of 9 from the floor, hitting both attempts from distance. Berry made 6 of 10 field goal attempts and Jeff Dowtin was 6 of 8 from the floor for 13 points. E.C. Matthews added 10 points for the Rams.

Rhode Island, which led 40-24 at the break, was up by as many as 28 in the second half. The Rams took a 66-38 lead midway through the final period following a Robinson layup.

The Rams hit 54 percent (33-61) from the floor while limiting UNC Asheville to 43 percent (18 of 42).

Kevin Vannatta led the Bulldogs with 14 points. MaCio Teague and Drew Rackley added 12 apiece.
