Troy helps UNC Greensboro upend Mercer 70-66 in OT

Men's College Basketball, UNC Greensboro Spartans, Mercer Bears

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Demetrius Troy scored the first five points of overtime and finished with 12 points and UNC Greensboro held on for a 70-66 win over Mercer on Saturday night.

After Troy made it 60-55 with a 3-pointer, the Spartans (14-5, 5-1 Southern Conference) made 10 of 16 free throws in the last 96 seconds. The misses allowed the Bears to get back into the game until Marvin Smith made a free throw with 4.7 seconds left to restore the two-possession difference.

Mercer (10-10, 3-4) didn't score in the extra period until Ross Cummings made a pair of free throws with 53.1 seconds left. Then the Bears, who missed their first seven shots in overtime made their last two plus four more free throws.

Francis Alonso led UNCG with 17 points and Smith had 15.

Stephon Jelks had 11 points and 11 boards for Mercer, including the 3-pointer that tied it with 17.8 seconds left in regulation. Alonso dribbled the clock down but missed a contested shot in the lane at the buzzer.
