Wright's 22 PTs leads San Diego past San Jose St. 81-64

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Isaiah Wright scored 22 points on 9-for-13 shooting and distributed seven assists and Olin Carter III had 18 points and San Diego defeated San Jose State 81-64 in the Toreros season opener on Sunday.

Isaiah Nichols made a layup and Jaycee Hillsman added a pair of free throws to bring San Jose State to within 16-14, but the Toreros used a 15-1 run with 3-pointers from Carter, Hunter Summy and Cameron Neubauer and never looked back.

San Diego led 51-29 at halftime and pushed the lead to 64-34 with 14:13 left to play. Neubauer and Isaiah Pineiro each scored 13 points. The Toreros shot 31 for 54 (57.4 percent) from the field.

Ryan Welage led San Jose State (1-1) with 17 points and Hillsman had 13.

San Diego now leads the all-time series 8-7. The Spartans entered having won the last two meetings, including 76-67 in their most recent matchup at the Great Alaska Shootout on November 27, 2015.
