RACE RUNDOWN....News & Links

Kyle Busch wins wild race at Martinsville The sun went down, the new lights came on, and all hell broke loose at Martinsville Speedway. In a wild overtime finish that took Sunday's First Data 500 to 505 laps at the .526-mile short track, Kyle Busch beat Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series leader Martin Truex Jr. to the stripe by .141 seconds to take the checkered flag and earn a spot in the Nov. 19 Championship 4 race at Homestead-Miami Speedway. As Busch crossed the finish line, a multi-car wreck behind him scrambled the running order and left a parking lot of mangled cars on the frontstretch. But that was simply the final act in a drama that saw a succession of Playoff contenders lose excellent chances to win the first event in the Round of 8. Chase Elliott held the lead with three laps left in regulation distance when Denny Hamlin dumped Elliott's #24 Chevrolet in Turn 3, causing the 11th caution and sending the race into overtime. Ten laps earlier, Brad Keselowski appeared headed for victory and a guaranteed ticket to Homestead before Joey Logano developed a severe tire rub after contact from Busch's #18 Toyota in Turn 1. Logano spun off Ryan Blaney's front bumper when the tire went flat in Turn 2, and Elliott grabbed the lead after the restart on Lap 497, with Hamlin following. Hamlin punted Elliott a lap later, and hard feelings continued after the race, with Elliott running Hamlin's Toyota into the outside wall on the cool-down lap. Elliott's wreck set the stage for Busch to win for the second time at Martinsville, the fifth time this season and the 43rd time in his career. After Hamlin cleared Busch on the overtime restart, Busch cut to the inside and wheel-hopped into Hamlin's Camry, forcing his JGR teammate up the track. Hamlin fell to seventh at the finish behind Clint Bowyer in third, Keselowski in fourth, Kevin Harvick in fifth and Trevor Bayne in sixth.(NASCAR Wire Service)[Read More Here](10-29-2017)

#18-Kyle Busch won the First Data 500 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race at Martinsville Speedway in NASCAR Overtime for his 5th win of 2017, 2nd win at Martinsville and 43rd career win.
After #11-Hamlin wrecked then leader #24-Elliott going for the lead, the race ended in NASCAR Overtime, adding five extra laps.
#11-Hamlin took the lead with #18-Busch 2nd, Busch was able to take the lead, #11 fell back and just before the checkered flag, #21-Blaney made contact with #11-Hamlin.
The #11 spun collecting a bunch of cars including: 11 21 41 6 19 48 31 4 20 17
The win assures that Kyle Busch will run for the championship at Homestead.
#78-Truex Jr. finished 2nd followed by #14-Bowyer, #2-Keselowski, #4-Harvick, #6-Bayne, #11-Hamlin, #21-Blaney, #20-Kenseth and #17-Stenhouse Jr.

How to Calculate Track Speeds: use the formula Speed = Distance divided by Time. Distance is Track Length, and Lap Time into Hours. Once hour is 3600 seconds, so the calculation for a 48 second lap at Daytona(2.5 miles) would be: Speed = 2.5 x (3600/48), = 2.5 x 75 = 187.500mph. For a 19 second lap at Martinsville(.533 miles): Speed = .533 x (3600/19), = .533 x 189.474 = a speed of 100.990mph

Storyline - Multiple Challenges Packed Into Short Track at Martinsville: The tire set-up at Martinsville Speedway is a prime example of Goodyear's testing program and how the tiremaker keeps up with tracks. Because of the time of year the NASCAR Cup circuit races at Martinsville, cool temperatures usually prevail. With that, and the added challenge of laying rubber down on the smooth, concrete corners of the half-mile oval, Goodyear tested at Martinsville in advance of the 2017 season and brought a new right-side tire to the track for the spring race. The results were spot on as the tire set-up laid down rubber, making for multiple racing grooves and better racing on what was already one of the most exciting tracks on the schedule. In addition to the tread compound being important, the tire construction brought to Martinsville is equally so, handling the harsh demands of acceleration, deceleration and cornering required on the long straightaways and tight, flat turns.
"Goodyear will bring the same tire set-up to Martinsville for the October race that was debuted in the spring," said Greg Stucker, Goodyear's director of racing. "This combination was developed specifically for Martinsville, and its unique, flat, concrete corners. The package features a right side tread compound formulated to lay rubber quickly on this tricky surface, which leads to multiple racing grooves. During the spring race, the tire did exactly that, turning the light-colored concrete corners to black, and opening up the outside groove which made for great side-by-side racing all afternoon."

Notes: Teams in both the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series will run the same tire set-up at Martinsville this weekend . . . this is the same tire set-up teams in these two series ran at this track in April . . . this left-side tire code (D-4588) has been run at this track since April 2013, while this right-side tire code (D-4722) debuted this spring . . . this is the only track at which NASCAR teams will run either of these two tire codes . . . as on most NASCAR ovals one mile or less in length, teams will not run inner liners in their tires at Martinsville.
