Kurt Busch wins the Daytona 500: #41-Kurt Busch won the 59th Annual Daytona 500 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race at Daytona International Speedway for his 1st win of the season, 1st win at Daytona and 29th career win. Busch led only the final lap after taking the lead from #42-Larson, who ran out of gas after taking the white flag.
#21-Blaney finished a career best 2nd, followed by #47-Allmendinger, #43-Almirola, #27-Menard, #22-Logano, #5-Kahne, #15-Waltrip (in his final Cup race), #32-DiBenedetto, and #6-Bayne.
The "big one" happened on lap 127 when contact between #1-McMurray, #48-Johnson, and #6-Bayne led to a 16 car accident that eliminated #48-Johnson, #14-Bowyer, #10-Patrick, #96-Kennignton, and #37-Buescher.
Another big wreck followed on lap 141. #1-McMurray tried to pull inside of #24-Elliott but caught his bumper. 11 cars were involved and #1-McMurray, #2-Keselowski, #13-TDillon and #19-Suarez were eliminated from the race.
#24-Chase Elliott, the pole sitter, led 23 laps on the day, and was leading with 3 laps to go, but had a hiccup on gas and fell back to 14th at the finish.
#88-Earnhardt, Jr., running in his first race since Kentucky last July, started 2nd and was running near the front of the field when he was caught in an accident with Kyle Busch on lap 106. The team could not make repairs and he finished 37th.
#18-Busch was the leader at the end of stage one on lap 60, but he spun out when a tire went down on lap 106 and finished 38th.
#4-Harvick won stage two on lap 120, but got damage in an accident and finished 22nd.
There were 37 lead changes among 18 drivers and 8 cautions for 40 yellow flag laps.
The average speed was 143.187mph.

France addresses Daytona 500 drivers meeting: In an unusual move because of its location and tone, NASCAR CEO and chairman Brian France admonished Cup drivers about blocking during Sunday's Daytona 500. Wave Around: how the wave around rule works: All vehicles between the leader and the caution vehicle at the start/finish line when the "one to go" signal is given by the starter are considered "Wave Around" eligible. "Wave Around" vehicles will not be permitted to enter pit road at any time during this yellow flag/caution period. "Wave Around" vehicles must receive the green flag on the race track before being permitted to enter pit road without a penalty. Vehicles under a penalty and the "Free Pass" vehicle will not be eligible to receive a "Wave Around".
Engine Rule at Daytona: the engine rule is a little different at Daytona 500 then the other 35 races, teams must run the same engine from Saturday's first practice session through the Can-Am Duels 150 mile qualifying races. If a team makes a change before the Duels, then it must start at the rear of the Duel 150 field and the Daytona 500). After the Duel 150 races, teams can make an engine change before the Happy Hour practice session. After that, if an engine change is made, the driver will start at the rear of the Daytona 500.
Restrictor Plates: in 2017, the holes of the restrictor plate are 56/64ths of an inch in diameter, down slightly from 2016's 57/64ths.
Double Yellow Line at Daytona = do not pass: In order to emphasize the yellow-line rule at Daytona International Speedway and Talladega Superspeedway where passes are not permitted, NASCAR has made the single yellow line into a double-yellow line. The second yellow line was painted on the inside of the existing yellow line.
Pit Stall Selections: The selections of pit stalls for the Daytona 500 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race at Daytona International Speedway have been made.
Pole sitter #24-Elliott chose pit stall 4, the first stall available [as do most pole sitters].
Outside pole sitter #88-Earnhardt, Jr. took pit stall 21, with an opening in front of it.
#1-McMurray, who starts 3rd, took the 20th stall.
The final pit stall was taken by #2-Keselowski, who starts 7th.

#96-Kennington was the highest finishing Open Team (non-chartered team), finishing 15th. The other two Open teams: #7-Sadler finishing 16th. #51-Hill went to the garage midway through the race and finished 21st.
Kennington raced his way into the race. #7-Sadler gets in the race via his qualifying speed. #51-Hill will not make the race.
There were two cautions during the race: one for a competition caution and the second when #48-Johnson cut a tire and hit the wall after contact with #21-Blaney. Johnson will have to go to a backup car for the race.

#83-LaJoie was the highest finishing Open Team (non-chartered team), finishing 18th. Elliott wins Daytona 500 pole again: #24-Chase Elliott win the Coors Light pole for the Daytona 500 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race at Daytona International Speedway with a speed of 192.872mph, his 2nd Daytona pole and 3rd career pole. Elliott has never won from the pole. #88-Dale Earnhardt Jr. will start 2nd after running 192.864mph. The front row is locked into those spots. The rest of the field will be determined by the Can-Am Duel 150 Qualifying Races on Thursday (7pm/et on FS1). The rest of the top12: #2-Keselowski, #14=Bowyer, #78-Truex Jr., #11-Hamlin, #4-Harvick, #5-Kahne, #20-Kenseth, #31-Newman, #18-Busch and #13-Ty Dillon.
Winning back-to-back Daytona 500 poles is something of a family tradition, as #24-Chase Elliott proved by the skin of his teeth on Sunday at Daytona International Speedway. The last driver to take a lap in the second and final round of Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series qualifying at the 2.5-mile superspeedway, Elliott covered the distance in 46.663 seconds (192.872 mph) to edge Hendrick Motorsports teammate #88-Dale Earnhardt Jr. by .002 seconds. The pole was the second straight for Elliott, who led the field to green last year as a Sunoco rookie. It was the third straight for Elliott's crew chief, Alan Gustafson, who won the pole with driver Jeff Gordon in 2015 in Gordon's last year as a full-time driver. With three straight poles as a crew, Gustafson shares a record previously held solely by Ernie Elliott, Chase Elliott's uncle, who fielded cars driven by former Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series champion Bill Elliott, Chase's father.
"Everybody at Hendrick Motorsports has done a lot of work this off-season," said Elliott, who claimed the third Coors Light Pole Award of his career, all at restrictor-plate tracks. "This team definitely has a knack for these plate tracks, as they showed with Jeff Gordon and then last year with here and Talladega (where Elliott also won the pole). But that stuff doesn't just happen by staying the same, as everybody knows. Everyone is always trying to get better and make their cars better and faster; and the engine shop is always finding new things. So I think that's just proof that they're improving with everybody else and taking that next step, which is really impressive. I'm happy to be a part of it, and hopefully we can run good next Sunday."
Elliott and Earnhardt are the only two drivers locked into their starting spots for next Sunday's 59th running of the Great American Race. They will lead the field to the green flag in the first and second Can-Am Duel 150-mile qualifying races on Thursday night, Elliott in the first Duel, Earnhardt in the second. Earnhardt is racing for the first time since a concussion sidelined him for the final 18 events of the 2016 season. The satisfaction of locking in a front-row starting position tempered his disappointment at missing the pole by the slimmest of margins. "I certainly would have loved to have gotten a pole, but my boss man (Rick Hendrick) is happy," Earnhardt said. "I just talked to him on the phone, and he's got to be thrilled with having his cars up front." Brad Keselowski qualified third at 192.691 mph and will start on the outside of the front row in Thursday night's first Duel. Clint Bowyer, in his first competitive effort in a Stewart-Haas Racing Ford will start beside Earnhardt in the second Duel after posting the fourth fastest speed (192.571 mph).
With 36 chartered teams knowing they will race next Sunday, six "Open" entries are vying for the four remaining berths in the Daytona 500 field. Sunday's time trials brought good news for Brendan Gaughan and Elliott Sadler, who know they will race next Sunday as the two fastest qualifiers among the "go-or-go-homers." Conversely, Jeffrey Earnhardt and Timmy Hill, who posted the two slowest times in the field, can race in the 500 only if they are the fastest Open drivers in their respective Duels.(NASCAR Wire Service)
During round one of qualifying #24-Elliott was also fastest at 192.308mph, followed by #88-Earnhardt Jr., #2-Keselowski, #78-Truex Jr., #20-Kenseth, #11-Hamlin, #14-Bowyer, #18-Busch, #31-Newman, #5-Kahne, #4-Harvick and #13-Dillon, these 12 drivers advanced to the 2nd/final round and went for the two locked positions of the pole and outside pole.
Not Advancing: 17, 48, 19, 42, 22, 21, 6, 77, 27, 41, 1, 10, 43, 3, 34, 47, 32, 95, 37, 38, 75*, 72, 15, 7*, 55*, 96*, 23, 83*, 33, 51*.
The six Open/non-Charter, teams running for the four open Daytona 500 spots, #75-Gaughan and #7-Sadler secured spots by being the two fastest non-charter cars in qualifying. Gaughan was 33rd fastest and Sadler was 36th fastest. The next two drivers in speed are #55-Sorenson and #96-Kennington. If either Gaughan or Sadler are the highest finisher in their Duels, Sorenson would make the race on speed. If both Gaughan and Sadler are the highest finisher in their Duels, then both Sorenson and Kennington would make the Daytona 50 field. The remaining two drivers: #83-LaJoie and #51-Hill, have to be the highest finishing non-Charter car to make the race.

Daytona 500 Specific Qualifying - Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series
- Thirty-six Charter teams will be assigned a starting position
- Four Open teams are eligible for starting positions
o The highest finishing Open team in each Can-Am Duel race earns a starting position
o The final two starting positions are awarded to Open teams based on Coors Light Pole Qualifying if not already a top finisher in a Duel race
- Qualifying sets the front row for the Daytona 500 and the starting lineup for the Can-Am Duel fields, with the number of Charter team and Open team cars split evenly throughout both races
- If qualifying is cancelled due to weather, the top two finishing Open teams from each Can-Am Duel race earn starting positions in the Daytona 500
- If the second Can-Am Duel race is cancelled due to weather, the highest finishing Open team from the first race earns a starting position, with the other three Open teams determined by qualifying
- If both Can-Am Duel races are cancelled due to weather, qualifying determines all four Open teams
- If qualifying and both Can-Am Duel races are cancelled due to weather, the combined practice speeds are used to determine the four Open teams
- If all on-track activity prior to the race is cancelled due to weather, 2015 Owner points will be used to determine the four Open teams

Qualifying - Daytona 500, Daytona International Speedway: Qualifying for the Daytona 500 Event (Qualifying Format, 150-Mile Qualifying Races) is outlined in this Section. As described more-fully in this Section, the Qualifying process for the Daytona 500 is scheduled to be a 2-step process:
Qualifying (two rounds of single car qualifying)
Two 150-Mile Qualifying Races
As a general rule, eligibility for starting grid positions for the Daytona 500 Event will be determined as follows:
36 Charter Teams will be eligible for and assigned a starting grid position
4 Open Teams will be eligible for starting grid positions
Open Team with highest finishing position in each Duel will be eligible for a starting grid position
Remaining Open Teams will be eligible for 2 starting grid positions based on final Qualifying results
If Qualifying is rained out, Duel finishing positions determine eligibility of 4 Open Teams (2 from each Duel)
If Duel 2 is rained out, Duel 1 determines eligibility for 1 Open Team; Qualifying determines eligibility for 3 Open Teams
If Duel 1 and Duel 2 are rained out, Qualifying determines eligibility for 4 Open Teams
If Qualifying, Duel 1&2 are rained out, combined practice speeds determine eligibility for 4 Open Teams
If Practice, Qualifying, Duel 1&2 are rained out, previous season's Team Owner Championship point standings determine eligibility for 4 Open positions

How to Calculate Track Speeds: use the formula Speed = Distance divided by Time. Distance is Track Length, and Lap Time into Hours. Once hour is 3600 seconds, so the calculation for a 48 second lap at Daytona(2.5 miles) would be: Speed = 2.5 x (3600/48), = 2.5 x 75 = 187.500mph. For a 19 second lap at Bristol(.533 miles): Speed = .533 x (3600/19), = .533 x 189.474 = a speed of 100.990mph
