Storyline - Designing in more tire wear at low-wear Las Vegas: Over the years, Las Vegas Motor Speedway has come to be known as one of the more low tire wear tracks on the NASCAR circuit. It has been an expressed goal of Goodyear to address this and develop a tire that wears more, thus generating more falloff and running cooler. After bringing "softer" tread compounds to Las Vegas in 2017, Goodyear furthered its efforts by switching Cup and Xfinity Series teams to a multi-zone tread right-side tire for 2018, which both runs cooler with its inboard Endurance Zone compound and wears more with its outboard Traction Zone compound.
"NASCAR has a handful of tracks on the schedule that don't wear tires much," said Greg Stucker, Goodyear's director of racing. "Over the last couple years we have made it a priority to look at these tracks and introduce more wear by the compounds we bring. Being able to do that really helps the racing in a couple ways. First, a tire that wears more is able to dissipate more heat that is generated by the speed these cars run; and second, if a tire wears and there is more fall-off from the beginning of the run to the end, tire management comes more into play and creates the potential for drivers that are easy on their tires early in a run to be able to work through the field and pass more cars late in a run."
Notes - Cup, Xfinity teams return to Las Vegas on same tire set-up as earlier event: While teams in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup and Xfinity Series will run the same right-side tire as those in the Camping World Truck Series at Las Vegas this week, they will be on a different left-side tire . . . this is the same combination of left- and right-side tires Cup and Xfinity teams ran at Las Vegas in March . . . this right-side tire is a multi-zone tread tire, featuring a two-inch inboard compound for heat resistance (Endurance Zone) and a 10-inch outboard compound for enhanced grip (Traction Zone) . . . Las Vegas is the only track at which either of these two tire codes are run by Cup or Xfinity teams . . . as on all NASCAR ovals greater than one mile in length, teams are required to run liners in all four tire positions at Las Vegas . . . air pressure in those inner liners should be 12-25 psi greater than that of the outer tire.
