Storyline - Tires critical at Sonoma: Road course racing in NASCAR, especially at this week's stop at Sonoma Raceway, provides challenges for all concerned. From Goodyear's perspective, the major factors that go into making a tire recommendation are the extreme braking entering the corners and extreme acceleration off the corners. Sonoma is a slower speed and more technical road course than the circuit's other traditional left-right course at Watkins Glen. Because of the grip required to handle those two conditions, Goodyear brings the softest tread compound it uses at any NASCAR track.

"Unique for the Sonoma race, because of the amount of deceleration entering the corners and acceleration off, we will mount our tires in a directional manner where the left-front and right-rear tires are mounted the same and the right-front and left-rear are mounted the same," said Greg Stucker, Goodyear's director of racing. "This helps protect the beveled splice of the tread component, insuring the splice is 'closed' under the force of braking on both front tires, and also 'closed' under the force of acceleration on both rear tires. Not knowing if a tire will be placed on the left- or right-side of the car based on how teams make up their sets for the weekend, we will have our 'Goodyear' and 'Eagle' branding on both sidewalls of every tire."

Notes - Goodyear returns with same tire for Sonoma: Teams in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series will run the same Goodyear tire code on all four tire positions at Sonoma . . . this tire has been run at Sonoma since 2016 . . . this is the only track at which teams in NASCAR's three national touring series will run this tire code . . . as on all NASCAR road courses, teams will not run inner liners in their tires at Sonoma.

Wet Weather Tires - White means wet: Goodyear will bring its wet weather radials for use at Sonoma, should NASCAR decide that conditions warrant . . . teams are allowed up to three sets of "wets" for practice/qualifying and up to three sets for the race . . . this tire was last run by NASCAR Xfinity Series teams at Mid-Ohio in 2016 . . . one change for this year, the "Goodyear" and "Eagle" lettering on the sidewalls of the wet weather tires is white, not the standard yellow.

Upcoming tire test - Goodyear to hold session at Indianapolis: Goodyear has a two-day tire test scheduled for Indianapolis Motor Speedway next Tuesday and Wednesday (June 26-27) . . . the final team and driver lineup are still to be determined.

Notes - Teams to run Phoenix tire set-up at repaved Gateway: This is the first time teams in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series have run this tire set-up at Gateway, though they have run it at Phoenix since 2016 . . . since the track was repaved after last year's Truck race, Goodyear held a tire test at Gateway in April . . . drivers participating in that test were Matt Crafton, Noah Gragson and Justin Haley . . . compared to what was run at this track last season, both this left- and right-side tire feature a compound change to be more heat resistant . . . as on all NASCAR ovals greater than one mile in length, teams are required to run inner liners in all four tire positions at Gateway . . . air pressure in those inner liners should be 12-25 psi greater than that of the outer tire.
