The United States put itself in a deep hole in World Cup qualifying with one of its worst performances in decades.

Taking advantage of defensive mistakes, Costa Rica routed the U.S. 4-0 Tuesday night to drop the Americans to 0-2 for the first time in the final round for the North and Central American and Caribbean region.

Johan Venegas scored in the 43rd minute, Cristian Bolanos doubled the lead in the 69th and second-half substitute Joel Campbell beat goalkeeper Brad Guzan in the 74th and 77th minutes in the worst margin of defeat for the U.S. in a qualifier since a 5-1 defeat at Mexico in November 1980.

Panama held Mexico to a scoreless draw at the Estadio Rommel Fernandez in Santa Clara.

In a game with few chances and little open play, Panama had the best opportunities to break the deadlock but could not find a way past Guillermo Ochoa.

The draw sees both nations sitting on four points in the CONCACAF table, two points behind leaders Costa Rica after two matches played.

Mexico next take on the Ticos when qualifying matches resume in March 2017, while Panama head to Trinidad and Tobago.

Honduras recovered from an opening defeat in the final round of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying to secure a 3-1 win at home over Trinidad and Tobago on Tuesday.

Trinidad and Tobago were forced to change their goalkeeper early on after Jan Michael Williams was injured, and his replacement Marvin Phillip conceded twice in a four-minute span.

Romell Quioto opened the scoring on 15 minutes after picking his spot from the edge of the 18-yard box, and soon after Alberth Elis turned a defender and teed up Emilio Izaguirre to send in a deflected shot at the near post.

The visitors got a goal back after half-time when Carlyle Mitchell headed in following a corner, but Eddie Hernandez sealed the win with 10 minutes to play by turning in Boniek Garcia's cross.

Trinidad and Tobago are still looking for their first point after losing their opener away to Costa Rica.
