CAF clears Ebola-free Liberia to host football games again

CAIRO -- The Confederation of African Football has cleared Liberia to host international football games again after it was declared free of Ebola by the World Health Organization.

It means Liberia will be able to play at home in 2017 African Cup of Nations qualifying, which begins next month, and 2018 World Cup qualifying later in the year.

However, CAF's announcement on Friday also noted that Guinea and Sierra Leone, the two other West African nations most-affected by the Ebola outbreak, cannot yet host games.

Matches were moved out of the three countries in the middle of last year. More than 11,000 people have died in the outbreak.

Liberia, where nearly 5,000 people died, was declared Ebola-free on May 9, but Guinea and Sierra Leone are still recording cases.
