Wanyama makes Tottenham return in Liverpool defeat

Kenya international Victor Wanyama returned to action after an injury lay-off on Saturday, coming on as a second-half substitute in Tottenham Hotspur's 2-1 defeat by Liverpool at Wembley.

Wanyama was introduced for Eric Dier on 83 minutes with Spurs 2-0 down following goals from Georginio Wijnaldum and Roberto Firmino for his first appearance in four months.

The hosts eventually halved the deficit when Erik Lamela struck in the 93rd minute of stoppage time, but were unable to nab a late equaliser.

The cameo was Wanyama's first appearance for Spurs since he picked up a booking in the 5-4 victory over Leicester City in May.

Since then, the East African powerhouse's injury problems have persisted.

He made only eight starts last term after being sidelined with knee problems, and missed the start of the current campaign after picking up another knee injury.

Despite returning as an unused substitute in Spurs' defeat by Watford before the international break, Wanyama didn't honour a call-up for the Kenya national side as they faced Ghana in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on Saturday.

Even without the 27-year-old, the Harambee Stars defeated the Black Stars 1-0 as they remain on course for a first AFCON appearance since 2004.
