Defending champions Vipers SC and heavyweights KCCA FC began the new Uganda Premier League campaign with wins as the campaign kicked off on Friday.

Substitute David Kasirye saved Vipers with the only goal of the game on the stroke of full time against newcomers Ndejje University FC at the newly refurbished St. Mary's Stadium, Kitende.

"It has been a very tough day, because we created several scoring chances but failed to take them," Vipers SC coach Javier Martinez Espinosa told KweséESPN. "We need to improve our scoring."

"This is just the beginning of the season, there are many games to come as we continue to work hard under a new coach," added captain Taddeo Lwanga.

"It's good that we picked up maximum points playing our first game on a refurbished ground."

KCCA FC, who reached the group stage of the CAF Champions League, also managed a 2-1 win over Tooro United FC at the Philip Omondi Stadium.

Youngster Allan Okello and Patrick Kaddu scored for KCCA FC, while Allan Kayiwa pulled one back for their opponents.

"Tooro United gave us a very good challenge," KCCA coach Mike Mutebi told the club's media team. "They were more active than us in the final third, and our performance was above average.

"When you look at the Tooro United team, their players are more experienced than our players, but we shall keep working hard in our way of doing things although my players still have so many things they have to learn."

In the other games, Bright Stars FC are the early pace-setters after a 3-1 win over Maroons FC, with skipper Nelson Senkatuka scoring a brace for the home side.

Augustine Kacancu scored the other goal for Bright Stars FC, while Rashid Agau netted for the visitors.

Coach Sam Ssimbwa's URA FC also managed a 2-0 win over Paidha Black Angels FC, while Kirinya-Jinja SS held SC Villa to a 2-2 draw. Arua based Onduparaka FC humbled newly promoted Nyamityobora FC 2-0.

Mbarara City FC are still left out of the league after they failed to fulfil some conditions of providing a home ground.

"The matter is being handled and I think they will be reinstated after they get an alternative where they will play from as they improve the Kakyeka Stadium in Mbarara," Edgar Watson, the Uganda FA Chief Executive Officer told KweséESPN.
