Ex-Kaizer Chiefs wideman David Obua relishing Maroons FC appointment

Former Uganda Cranes winger David Obua is relishing the latest step in his career after being appointed assistant coach of Uganda Premier League side Maroons FC.

Before retiring in 2015, Obua played for Kaizer Chiefs, Hearts of Midlothian and Express FC of the Uganda Premier League. He also enjoyed stints in the United States and Mauritius.

He's now set to take his first step in the world of coaching after signing with Maroons.

"I am ready for the coaching challenge," Obua told KweséESPN. "I know it is a different ball game from playing.

"I signed a three-year contract and officially started my new appointment on Monday, working under another former national player, George Nsimbe."

The experienced Nsimbe has previously handled Ugandan heavyweights KCCA FC, Vipers SC and Express FC, as well as Kenya's Tusker and Azam FC of Tanzania.

"It's a privilege to work under coach Nsimbe, who is very experienced, and I look forward to learn a lot from him as a start this journey," Obua added.

"I have acquired a UEFA B coaching licence, and I am now trying to work hard and get the UEFA A.

"The good thing with working with Ugandan players for the start is that I know them really well," the former wideman continued. "I am determined to bring a lot to Maroons FC, who have given me this great opportunity to kick-start my coaching profession."

Nsimbe was equally excited to have Obua on board as his assistant.

"I liked Obua as a player and now it is good to have him here working with me," the veteran coach told KweséESPN. "We'll work together as a team to drive [Maroons] in the right direction."

Maroons FC will open their 2018/2019 Uganda Premier League campaign away at Bright Stars FC on September 28.

Maroons FC finished in ninth last season under coach Asaph Mwebaze, who has since joined Onduparaka FC.
