Javier Martinez set for Vipers bow vs. KCCA FC

Vipers SC of Uganda Vipers SC of Uganda

Javier Espinosa Martinez will oversee his first match with reigning Uganda Premier League champions Vipers Sports Club when they face Uganda Cup holders KCCA FC in Saturday's 2018 FUFA Super Cup at the Mutesa II Wankulukuku Stadium.

The match is the traditional curtain-raiser of the domestic season, and represents a first chance to catch a glimpse of Vipers following the shock exit of former coach Miguel Da Costa.

The Portuguese tactician was fired after winning the league title, having failed to win the Uganda Cup and only managing to reach the quarter final of the regional CECAFA Kagame Club Championship in Tanzania.

"I have been here for over a month now and I am still understanding my players," Martinez told KweséESPN. "However, my team is prepared to play a good game against KCCA FC so that we start the season well.

"My players have been responding welll and we have played a number of friendly matches which have helped me gauge the players," he added.

Vipers will look to last season's top scorer Dan Sserunkuma, skipper Taddeo Lwanga, Moses Waiswa and new signing, Kenyan forward Noah Wafula.

However, they will miss Nicholas Wadada and midfielder Milton Karisa, who were instrumental to the team last season.

Ex-skipper Wadada joined Tanzania Premier League side Azam FC, while Karisa signed for Moroccan side Mouloudia Club.

"I am happy that my players have played several build-up games," KCCA FC coach Mike Mutebi told journalists. "Teams in Europe play so many games and this helps them to get better.

"We shall have an advantage over Vipers SC because we have been training for a while longer than our opponents," he added.

"My opinion is that the final will be competitive, although I don't care how many goals we score."

"It will not be an easy game for us," echoed KCCA wonderkid Allan Okello. "We want to go out there and score the goals that will help us win the title.

"It will be very nice to start with winning a trophy as the season kicks off."

KCCA FC, who failed to go past the group stage of the CAF Champions League, will also hope that their key players Patrick Kaddu, Saddam Ibrahim Juma, Muzamir Mutyaba and Okello find their good form against a Vipers side known to be very physical.
