No-one has asked for our 2026 World Cup vote - Uganda

Moses Hassim Magogo, the president of the Federation of Uganda Football Associations, says no country has contacted FUFA to ask for their support in bidding to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

FIFA members will convene in Moscow, Russia on June 13th to vote for either Morocco or the USA-Canada-Mexico joint bid, to determine hosting rights of the expanded 48-team showpiece eight years from now.

Recently, when US president Donald Trump made an appeal to African nations to vote for the joint bid, no federation contacted by KweséESPN was willing to go on record with their decision.

Magogo told KweséESPN: "Officially, as Uganda, we have not been approached by any of the countries bidding to host the FIFA 2026 World Cup.

"But we know where our interests are because everyone will vote in Russia based on their interests as a Federation, or as a country putting in mind the political aspect."

Magogo made it clear that he, personally, would vote for Morocco as the African bidder, but that the Federation as a whole would take a vote on the matter, and that the Ugandan government had not handed out requests.

"I have my view, which is to support our own African brothers, but my executive committee, which has sometimes had different opinion from mine, will make the final ruling. We shall put it to vote," explained Magogo.

"No one has reached out to us on who to vote for and the government has also not told us yet on who Uganda should vote for."

Morocco, in their fifth World Cup bid, hopes to become the second African country after South Africa, in 2010, to host the FIFA World Cup. But they face tough competition from the North Americans.

Last week the Liberian Football Association (LFA) announced that it will support the joint bid instead of Morocco. LFA president Musa Bility said the decision had been taken after consultation with the country's President, former world player of the year George Weah.

Other African nations to voice support for Morocco are Algeria, Guinea Bissau and South Africa.
