Muhammad Shaban, the top scorer at the 2017 COSAFA U-20 Championship, has been named in Uganda's squad for the Africa Nations Championship, which takes place in Morocco next month.

Shaban scored four goals at the tournament in Zambia earlier this month, where he also captained the Hippos as they were eliminated on penalties by Lesotho in the semi finals.

"I am happy that I have been named on the squad. I will make sure I work hard during training so that I make the final 23-man squad," the KCCA FC striker told KweséESPN on Tuesday.

Shaban who joined Uganda Premier League Champions KCCA FC a month ago from Arua-based Onduparaka FC was also part of the Uganda Cranes team at the Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year.

Zambia are based in Marrakech for the group stage of the upcoming CHAN, which kicks off on January 13, and are set to face Zambia, Namibia and the Cote d'Ivoire in the opening round.

Police FC striker Hood Kaweesa has been named in the squad, but would become ineligible if he completes a move to Zambia Premier League side Buildcon FC. The attacker was part of the CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup squad earlier this month, and currently tops the Ugandan scoring charts after netting seven goals so far.

Uganda FA spokesman Ahmed Hussein told KweséESPN that the 30 players named will start training on Wednesday.

Interim coach Moses Basena, who is also among the four coaches shortlisted for the national coaching job, will handle the team.

The Uganda FA is expected to name a new coach before the CHAN tournament, with Sébastien Desabre, Emilio Ferrera and Johnny McKinstry the other managers in the running for the Cranes' top job.
