Jackson Mayanja and Uganda's interim head coach Moses Basena have told KweséESPN that they have applied to take up the vacant Cranes national team job.
Uganda have been without a permanent head coach since the departure of Milutin Sredojevic in July, only six months after he oversaw the East Africans' first Africa Cup of Nations campaign since 1978.
High-profile Togo coach Claude Le Roy has also been linked with the vacant post, having previously coached Ghana, Cameroon, the Republic of Congo and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
However, he faces competition from Basena, who oversaw Uganda's qualification for the 2018 Africa Nations Championship.
"Yes I have applied for the national team job because I think I have what it takes to handle the job," Basena told KweséESPN on Monday. "What I have achieved as a coach speaks volumes.
"I feel this is the right moment for me to handle the national team on permanent basis," added Basena, who is also the head coach of Ugandan Premier League side UPDF FC.
"I have gained the experience coaching teams around East Africa and [through] working under Sredojevic, when we also guided the team to qualify for the 2017 AFCON after 39 years."
Former Uganda Cranes attacking midfielder Manyanja, who also played for Egyptian side Al Masry and was recently assistant coach of Tanzania's Simba SC, also submitted his application for the post.
"I have served before as assistant national team coach and think I have now got the experience to be in-charge," Mayanja told KweséESPN.
Sam Ssimbwa, another highly qualified local Ugandan coach who had been expected to apply for the job, told KweséESPN on phone from his base in Nairobi that he is not interested in the role at the current time.
"I will apply when I think it is the right time with more transparent ways of doing things by the Federation," began the Sofapaka FC coach and ex-Cranes assistant.
"Having experience coaching in Africa will also be important for this position," Uganda FA chief Executive Officer Edgar Suubi Watson told KweséESPN, "and of course many other things including the financial package."
The Ugandan FA closed the deadline for applications for the head coach's role on October 29, and will announce Micho's successor on November 15.
