Wanyama uncertain for Premier League opener, says Pochettino

Mauricio Pochettino is hopeful that Victor Wanyama will be available for Tottenham Hotspur's Premier League opener against Newcastle United after picking up a preseason injury.

The Kenya international picked up an injury in Spurs' 4-2 International Champions Cup victory over Paris Saint-Germain on Sunday.

He missed Tuesday's 3-2 defeat by AS Roma, and the 3-0 loss against Manchester City on Saturday to add to Tottenham's less-than-convincing preseason.

However, speaking after the defeat by City, Pochettino is confident that the East African will be back in time for the Lilywhites' Premier League opener away at Newcastle on August 13.

"He played against PSG and he suffered a small problem in his cartilage in his left knee," said Pochettino, as reported by Yahoo Sports.

"But sure, for next week, he will be available to train again," the Argentine coach added.

"Will he be ok for the start of the Premier League? We hope yes but we need to see how he develops and how he is next week when we come back to London."

Wanyama was an overwhelming success during his maiden season at Spurs after moving from Southampton for £11 million last summer.

He made 35 top flight appearances last term, scoring four goals and contributing one assist.
