Danny Rose says Tottenham 'can only do so much' to retain top players

Tottenham defender Danny Rose has suggested the future of many Spurs players could be out of the club's hands as individuals look for a new challenge.

Rose and his teammate Kyle Walker have both been linked to potential moves to the Manchester clubs this summer, though Tottenham would be eager to retain them ahead of another Champions League campaign.

But in an interview with BBC Radio 5 Live on Friday, Rose said that while some players like Harry Kane have decided to commit their futures to Tottenham, the same can't be said for all of his teammates who may lose patience with a lack of silverware.

"I think the club can only do so much," Rose said. "I think a lot of it's going to be down to the individual. I don't want to speak on behalf of anyone, but working with someone like Harry Kane, I can tell you that his mindset will be now, 'I'm staying at Tottenham, I'm going to break every single record ... I'm going to set new records, I'm going to get as close to [Premier League record scorer] Alan Shearer as possible, I'm going to captain this club into the new stadium.'

"So when you've got a player like him with that mindset, I don't think Tottenham have to worry in that respect. But I think it just depends where the individual is in the stage of his career.

"A player might feel that he's done enough at Tottenham, and he might fancy a change. You might feel that Tottenham is a nearly club, we 'nearly' go close to winning the league, we 'nearly' go close to winning the semifinal of the FA Cup, and he might choose to move on.

"I think the club can only do so much and try and make a place here that the club's going in the right direction and if you stick with us it won't be long before we are winning something."

Rose also acknowledged the difficulty that Tottenham face in trying to complete for transfers with the Premier League's richest clubs, while also expressing concern that Spurs aim to build "bigger and better depth" in the summer window.

"It will be difficult for us as a club to compete with City, United, Liverpool and Arsenal," Rose said. "I think the aim for the club should be to find the next Dele [Alli]. I know it's easier said than done, try and get someone from the lower leagues and try to make him a star.

"But I think for the next season coming we have to try to do a lot better in the Champions League this season, and I think we have to make one marquee signing this season that can hopefully make us push forward."
