FA charge Swansea's James Demetriou for alleged breach of betting rules

Swansea City striker James Demetriou has been charged with breaching Football Association rules in relation to betting, the FA has announced.

Demetriou, 19, signed for Swansea from Nottingham Forest on a free transfer last August.

A statement published on the FA's official website on Thursday afternoon read: "Swansea City's James Demetriou has been charged for alleged multiple breaches of FA Rule E8 in relation to betting. The player has until June 1, 2015 to respond to the charge."

The Australian-born Cyprus under-21 international agreed a two-year deal at the Liberty Stadium after the expiration of his Forest deal last summer, and went into the Swans' U21 development squad.

An FA statement on betting rules reads: "A worldwide ban on betting on football came into force on August 1, 2014 for all those involved in the game at Premier League, Football League, Football Conference and Women's Super League levels, as well as those at clubs in the the Northern, Southern and Isthmian leagues and all other Participants who do not fall into the category below.

"Participants covered by the ban will be prohibited from betting, either directly or indirectly, on any football match or competition that takes place anywhere in the world.

"The changes to FA Rules from the start of the 2014-15 season effect a worldwide ban on betting on any other football-related matter.

"For example, the transfer of players, employment of managers or team selection. The passing of inside information to somebody that uses the information for betting remains prohibited."
