Sudan beat Guinea 2-1 in CHAN opener

Sudan demonstrated their African Nations Championship credentials on Sunday with a 2-1 victory over Guinea despite missing a second-half penalty.

The more experienced Sudan, whose home-based team has largely the same makeup as their full side, took the lead in the 19th minute when Omer Suilman headed home from Elsamani Elsawi Saaledin's corner.

Guinea, who finished fourth in the last edition of the biennial tournament, battled back when the talented Sekou 'Trezeguet' Camara met Mohamed Bangoura's cross to beat Salim Elhadi Akram in the 55th minute, but largely struggled to cope with their opponents thereafter.

Sudan could have taken the lead from the spot after Walaa Eldin was hauled down in the box, but Maki Saifeldin Bakhit fired his penalty kick over in a significant let off for the Syli Nationale.

However, Bakhit made amends in the 74th minute when he picked up Mohamed Bashir's delicious backheel before controlling soundly and firing home.

Guinea had the chance to level the contest at the death, only for Sudanese stopper Akram to pull off an excellent stop.

The win takes Sudan second in Group A - level on points with hosts Morocco, who launched their CHAN campaign with a 4-0 rout of Mauritania in Saturday's tournament opener.
