Bayern Munich competing with Liverpool for Alonso - Hoeness

Bayern Munich's honorary president Uli Hoeness has said that the Bavarian club are competing with Liverpool for the signature of Xabi Alonso as both clubs look to appoint new managers this summer.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has announced he is leaving the Merseyside teamĀ at the end of the season after nearly nine years at the helm, while Bayern's Thomas Tuchel agreed to leave the reigning German champions when this term ends following a run of poor form after the winter break.

Alonso, who played for both clubs, looks poised to lead Bayer Leverkusen to their first-ever Bundesliga title as they have a 10-point lead over Bayern with eight games to play.

"Clubs like Liverpool, Real Madrid, Leverkusen and FC Bayern are working on [hiring Alonso]," Hoeness said to German outlet Ran.

"He's proven that he can be a coach for the big time. There are hardly any coaches who come into question who are currently free, who don't have a job or who are on sabbatical.

"It's not so easy to tell them that FC Bayern is the measure of all things."

Alonso is contracted to Leverkusen until 2026 and has refused to be drawn on questioning around his future. He has led the club on an unprecedented 38-game unbeaten run in all competitions.

Leverkusen remain in contention for a historic treble this season after reaching the quarterfinals of the Europa League and the semifinals of the German Cup.
