Regan Poole joins Man United from Newport County on four-year deal

Newport County have confirmed young defender Regan Poole has joined Manchester United.

As revealed by ESPN FC earlier on deadline day, Manchester United had lined up a surprise swoop for Poole and they have now secured a deal to bring the 17-year-old to Old Trafford.

The youngster has signed a four-year deal at United after passing a medical and agreeing personal terms on deadline day.

Poole, who became Newport's youngest ever player when he started against Shrewsbury in September 2014 at the age of 16 years and 94 days, has also attracted interest from the likes of Liverpool, Fulham and Hull City.

However, United have moved quickly to sign Poole for a six-figure fee and he is expected to go into the club's under-21s set-up.

Newport boss Terry Butcher admitted once United showed their interest in Poole there was one place he was going.

"In the past few days a number of clubs have shown an interest in Regan, but as soon as Manchester United came in there was only really going to be one outcome," Butcher told the club's official website.

"It is every boy's dream to play for Manchester United, and it's a wonderful opportunity for him to progress at such a magnificent club. It doesn't matter which country you are in, or where you are in the world, when Manchester United come calling you have to answer."
