Maritzburg grab away goal against SuperSport

Maritzburg United snatched a late away-goal in a 1-1 draw with SuperSport United in the first leg of their MTN8 semifinal at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday night.

It was no less than the Team of Choice deserved after a final 20 minutes in which Fadlu Davids' side took control as they went in search of an equaliser, which duly arrived via Lebohang Maboe.

Maboe worked himself into a good position on the right side of the penalty area from a throw-in and fired a left-footed strike into the far corner of the net in the 84th minute.

Eric Tinkler's SuperSport, who were the dominant team for 70 minutes, had taken the lead in fine style after 53 minutes when Dove Wome found Thuso Phala's run down the right channel with a lovely outside-foot pass, and Phala rifled the ball into the roof of the net.

The reverse fixture takes place at Harry Gwala Stadium on September 9, when SuperSport will need to match Maritzburg's away-goal to stand any chance of progession.

Sunday's MTN8 action pits Benni McCarthy's Cape Town City against Gavin Hunt's Absa Premiership champions Bidvest Wits at Cape Town Stadium.
