Isaac Mbenza completes late Huddersfield switch

Huddersfield Town have completed a deadline-day deal to bring Isaac Mbenza to the club from Montpellier HSC, the Premier League side confirmed on Thursday.

According to a statement on the Terriers' website, the Belgo-Congolese wideman moves to the Yorkshire side on a season-loan loan deal although David Wagner's side have the option to sign the 22-year-old permanently at the season's end.

The 22-year-old can feature on either flank, and should offer pace, dribbling and goals - he scored 10 in Ligue 1 last term - to Huddersfield.

"Isaac is a very exciting player and this is a great deal for Huddersfield Town for a player with such ability and potential," Wagner told Huddersfield's website. "You do not play for Belgium at Under-21 level unless you have some outstanding attributes.

"He's a very quick winger with a direct style of play, which is exactly what we were looking for. As you can see from his last season at Montpellier, he has a real eye for goal too.

"When we first spoke, it's clear that he is a real winner too; a fierce competitor who will not accept second-best," Wagner added of his new No. 18. "I like these characteristics in our players!"

Mbenza began his career with Valenciennes before joining Standard Liege in 2016.

"I'm looking forward to working with Isaac on the training pitch and in the classroom to help him understand our style of play."

Paris-born Mbenza is eligible for France, the Democratic Republic of Congo, or Belgium, who he has represented at various youth levels.

Huddersfield begin their Premier League campaign at home against Chelsea on Saturday.
