Azam defeat Gor Mahia to set up all-Tanzanian CECAFA Cup final

Tanzania's Azam FC will meet domestic rivals Simba SC in the final of the 2018 CECAFA Kagame Club Championship after beating Kenya Premier League champions Gor Mahia FC 2-0 after extra time in their semi final on Wednesday.

Ditram Nchimbi and Bruce Kangwa scored for the defending champions at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam, and they'll meet Tanzanian champions Simba who defeated Jeshi La Kujenga Uchumi FC of Zanzibar 1-0.

Nchimbi beat Boniface Oluoch in the 93rd minute after a defensive mix-up as Gor tired, and Kangwa killed the contest seven minutes later following a swift counter attack.

"We did not play well today. Yes we had some key players missing because of injury, but generally we were not at our best and yet Azam took their chances," Gor Mahia coach Dylan Kerr told KweséESPN.

"We had a few chances in the first half, but my players lacked the punch to kill off the game."

Gor Mahia defender Godfrey Walusimbi said it was painful losing to Azam FC again, with the Kenyan heavyweights having lost to them in the 2015 final.

"Personally I am not happy that we failed to beat Azam," he told KweséESPN, "but this is football and we need to wait for our play-off game before heading back for our CAF Confederation Cup game next week."

For Simba, Meddie Kagere, a new signing from Gor, netted the lone goal after 45 minutes to take his tally to three in the tournament.

"We are very happy with the level of competition going into the final day of the championship," Nicholas Musonye, the Secretary General of the Council for East and Central African Football Association (CECAFA)," told KweséESPN. "We believe these games have helped our teams prepare better for the CAF competitions."
