Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League giants Dynamos finally reached the summit of the league table this season after their outstanding win over Chapungu in Gweru on Thursday.

The game was abandoned on 18 June following the 56th minute collapse of a goal frame as Lloyd Mutasa's team led 4-0, with the Premier Soccer League secretariat subsequently taking forever to map the way forward.

There were to be no further goals as the two teams completed the remaining 34 minutes to officially hand Dynamos the three points they needed to seize the initiative in the title race.

Winger Emmanuel Mandiranga had netted a brace back in June, with Denvar Mukamba and Christian Ntouba weighing with a goal each.

The 21-time champions now lead the standings with 52 points, one more than both Chicken Inn and FC Platinum, who are separated by goal difference in second and third respectively.

Ngezi are a further point behind in fourth with nine match days to go, setting the stage for a thrilling dash to the finish line in what could be the league's most pulsating title contests in years.

Dynamos will need to show some character and withstand the drama that has engulfed their camp of late if they are to retain their place at the top in what has so far been an overly competitive season.

The former champions suffered their first defeat in eight matches on Sunday, going down 1-0 to bitter rivals CAPS United just a week after a somewhat fortunate escape in a 1-1 draw at home to Highlanders.

Zifa president Phillip Chiyangwa's subsequent attempts to rescind a red card on the league's top scorer Ntouba only served to create an unnecessary controversy at the most inappropriate time for Dynamos, who went on to lose to CAPS with the Cameroonian hitman on the sidelines.

Ntouba has struck a productive partnership with skilful midfielder Mukamba, but unfortunately for Dynamos the former Bidvest Wits man has of late struggled for touch.

Perennial problem child Mukamba, with seven goals and seven assists to his name, was again subdued as the Chapungu tie was completed on Thursday, just hours after he had been pardoned for using abusive language in a nasty training ground fallout with coaches.

Mutasa will however be relieved that with nine matches before the season concludes, he has a good chance to win his first title as coach in a season he was merely expected to lay the foundation for a bright future.
