David De Gea gave Manchester United no sign he plans summer exit - sources

Manchester United are confident David De Gea will stay this summer after having been given no indication from the player that he wants to leave, sources have told ESPN FC.

De Gea has been linked with a transfer to Real Madrid, two years after a proposed move to the Bernabeu collapsed at the last minute. But the club are convinced they can resist any attempt by the Spanish giants to sign the goalkeeper this summer.

The 26-year-old still has two years on the contract his signed in 2015, with the option of an additional year. That would put United in a strong negotiating position should De Gea decide he wants to go.

But sources said that De Gea left for the summer without giving any suggestion he does not expect to return for preseason training on July 8.

De Gea did not start any of United last three games of the season, including the Europa League final. It prompted more talk of a move to La Liga, and a return to the city where he grew up.

But despite being overlooked for the final in Stockholm in favour of No. 2 Sergio Romero, De Gea is not agitating for a move away from Old Trafford.

United have drawn up a list of alternatives should De Gea change his stance, including Atletico Madrid's Jan Oblak and Milan's Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Real Madrid would have to play a world-record fee even if De Gea made it clear he wanted to return to Spain. But, as it stands, Jose Mourinho expects to have De Gea as his first-choice goalkeeper again next season.

Gianluigi Buffon's £32.6 million move from Parma to Juventus in 2001 is the current record for a goalkeeper, although that could be eclipsed if Manchester City conclude a deal for Benfica stopper Ederson this summer.
