Zimbabwe drop stalwarts Katsande, Mushekwi

Captain Willard Katsande and striker Nyasha Mushekwi are among several regulars who have been left out of Zimbabwe's 25-member squad to face Liberia in a 2019 African Nations Cup qualifier in Harare on June 11.

Other notable absentees in a new-look squad announced by caretaker coach Norman Mapeza include goalkeeper Tatenda Mukuruva, defender Elisha Muroiwa and forwards Matthew Rusike and Cuthbert Malajila.

Katsande, Mushekwi, Rusike and Malajila have apparently been sacrificed for their part in the turmoil which engulfed the Warriors camp in the run to the 2017 Nations Cup finals, when the team threatened to boycott the trip to Gabon in a standoff with administrators over bonuses.

Zimbabwe football Association (ZIFA) chairman Phillip Chiyangwa last week vowed in an interview with a local weekly that some players would "never ever play for the national team during my tenure".

Mapeza has opted for an entirely new set of hitherto untested goalkeepers in FC Platinum's Petros Mhari, Highlanders' Ariel Sibanda and his namesake Edmore Sibanda of CAPS United. There was no room place for George Chigova of Polokwane City.

The Warriors will again have to content with new personnel in central defence following an injury to Costa Nhamoinesu, along with Elisha Muroiwa's loss of form.

In comes CAPS man Dennis Dauda, Sydney Linyama of Black Rhinos, Ngezi's Partson Jaure and South Africa-based Eric Chipeta. Jaure and Chipeta have played for the Warriors before.

Hardlife Zvirekwi's recent injury woes mean there will be a new man at right-back as well. In midfield, Mapeza has called up former Platinum defensive midfielder Thabani Kamusoka, now with Tanzanian giants Young Africans. In-form Ronald Chitiyo has also been thrown in to add some creative spark.
