Paul Clement has expressed interest in signing Chelsea captain John Terry this summer -- if Swansea stay in the Premier League.
Clement knows Terry well from their time at Stamford Bridge together, with the Swansea head coach being Carlo Ancelotti's assistant when Chelsea won a the Double in the 2009-10 season.
Clement has responded to Terry's announcement that he is leaving Chelsea at the end of the season by saying that he would love to bring the 36-year-old to South Wales.
Clement made an approach to Terry's former Chelsea teammate Frank Lampard in January before the former England international announced his retirement.
But Clement accepts the only chance Swansea have of signing Terry is if they avoid relegation from the Premier League, a mission which continues with Saturday's home game against Stoke. Swansea are two points adrift of safety in 18th position.
"If we stay up why wouldn't we be interested?'' Clement said at his prematch news conference. "I know John very well as a player and a person and I would be more than happy to speak to him.
"That is not something I have thought about at this point, we have to focus on the players and games we have got. When the season finishes we can have those discussions about our own players and potential targets.
"But having worked with John, I know what a fantastic player he is and what a career he has had. He has unbelievable talent and he is a fantastic leader -- one of a dying breed of leaders.
"He has represented that club so well over so many years in a time when players are too quick to move on and go from club to club. He's spent virtually his whole life playing there and congratulations to him for such an amazing career.''
Meanwhile, West Ham manager Slaven Bilic has not ruled out a summer move for Terry, saying: "You never say never."
Bilic told a news conference: "We are going to see. I'm a big admirer of John, he is one of the best that ever played, not only in that position but in general.
"He won everything, he did everything and we are talking about an England captain, a true leader.
"We are pretty well covered in that position, we have quality and we have experience, but we will see. You never say never."
Elsewhere, Crystal Palace manager Sam Allardyce said the club are well stocked for central defenders when asked whether he would have a potential interest in signing Terry.
But with Mamadou Sakho set to return to Liverpool at the end of his loan spell that situation could change.
"I've got Scott Dann, James Tomkins, Mamadou Sakho, Damien Delaney and Martin Kelly, so actually in central defence we're looking pretty secure," Allardyce said.
"I'm not sure if that's going to be a position we'll look at if and when we're safe, and hopefully we are safe by the end of the season. But that position looks pretty healthy from the number of the players we have.
"I'm not so sure that John, yes, fantastic player that he is, yes he'd do us a great job, but with those amount of centre-halves at the club I can't see that happening at the moment."
