Espanyol goalkeeper Diego Lopez discharged from hospital after head injury

Espanyol goalkeeper Diego Lopez has been discharged from hospital but will continue to rest at home after suffering a head trauma last weekend.

The Spaniard was stretchered off in the 40th minute of Sunday's 1-1 league draw at Levante after he banged heads with opposing striker Armando Sadiku during play and was knocked out.

Lopez spent three nights in hospital but his progress has been very positive and was allowed to return home on Wednesday.

"Diego Lopez has left hospital but will continue to rest at home for several days," the La Liga club tweeted.

The 36-year-old will still have to follow the concussion protocol before returning to training.

Lopez, who has made eight league starts for the Barcelona-based club, thanked everyone for their support. He wrote on Instagram: "Today I've been discharged form hospital and I'm with my family at home which is the best way of resting and recovering.

"After the fright, I have a lot to thank for. I want to thank Espanyol and Levante's medical team as well as Valencia's La Fe Hospital and Barcelona's Diagonal Clinic for treating me so well and looking after me in such difficult moments.

"I want to thank everyone who thought about me. It's been hard but thanks to everyone it has been much easier and I'm now looking forward to returning to the team which is what makes me happier."

Lopez missed Wednesday's Catalan Super Cup final, which Barcelona won 4-2 on penalties and is expected to sit out Sunday's home game against Real Sociedad.
