Son Heung-Min could avoid military service as South Korea win Asian Games

Son Heung-Min said he is looking forward to getting back to England and finding his best form for Tottenham after helping South Korea beat Japan 2-1 to win the Asian Games, a result that means he could avoid military service.

All able-bodied South Korean men must complete 21 months service in the military as a deterrent against the North, but exemptions are offered to athletes who win gold at the Asian Games or a medal of any colour at the Olympics.

The game was goalless after 90 minutes meaning it went to extra-time but South Korea quickly took the lead thanks to Lee Seung-Woo in the 93rd minute.

Salzburg's Hee Chan Hwang added a second following an assist from Son, before Ayase Ueda pulled Japan back into it with a fine header from a corner, but South Korea held on for the win.

"This was a really tough game but we knew that it would be, for everyone, this is a big tournament," Son told ESPN FC postmatch. "We played well when we needed too but we also had to dig deep.

"I want to say that my teammates have been amazing. It has been a tough time here but we pulled together and the team spirit was special. We worked so hard.

"I also want to talk about Tottenham. I had so many messages from Spurs and the fans and it was great. They have supported me so much and that means a lot to me.

"I really want to say thank you to the coach and the fans of Spurs. They are so special. Now I am looking forward to getting back to England and showing what I can do. "
