Kaizer Chiefs held by Highlands Park as Bidvest Wits go back top

Kaizer Chiefs' fine recent run came to a halt after they were held to a fortuitous goalless draw at promoted Highlands Park, while Bidvest Wits moved back to the summit of the Absa Premiership with a comfortable victory over Cape Town City on Tuesday.

Chiefs had looked impressive in winning their previous three league matches, but were largely outplayed by Highlands, who had by far the better chances at a packed Makhulong Stadium.

The home side gave an early warning of their prowess when Namibia international Peter Shalulile shot just over from 35-yards with Chiefs keeper Itumeleng Khune beaten.

The Bafana keeper was then forced to make a fine stop from experienced winger Lindo Mbatha when he drove in a ball from the edge of the box, before a first sight of goal for the visitors at the other end.

Tapuwa Kapini made a good stop to deny Dumisani Zuma after Gustavo Paez's pass was not dealt with by the Highlands defence.

But the best chances continue to fall for the home side. Mothobi Mvala, Highlands' leading scorer in recent years, inexplicably failed to connect with a low cross with an embarrassing 'fresh air' shot when he simply had to score, before Spiwe Msimango tested Khune with a low drive.

Highlands striker Moeketsi Sekola then headed over an Mbatha free-kick five minutes after the break, the striker guilty of not keeping his effort down.

The best chance of the game for the visitors fell to substitute Pule Ekstein, who missed a one-on-one opportunity with Kapini after being set up by a brilliant back-heel from Siphelele Ntshangase.

Cape Town City fielded eight replacement from their side that lifted the MTN8 trophy on Saturday, and came up short against a workmanlike Wits side who return to winning ways following their surprise home loss to Polokwane City last time out.

Scottish striker Simon Murray scored both goals for Wits, the first a penalty, and the visitors were full value for the victory.

He netted the first after being fouled in the box and stepping up to convert the spot-kick he won, before slamming home a second in first half injury-time.

City had plenty of good build-up play, but their problems in front of goal remain.

Polokwane City and SuperSport United played out a 1-1 draw after Aubrey Modiba had put the visitors in front with a sublime free-kick.

But City have been vastly improved since a shaky start to the season and they grabbed a deserved equaliser through Ayanda Nkili.

Ronwen Williams also had to make a fantastic save to deny City forward Rodney Ramagalela.

Finally, AmaZulu and Maritzburg United played to a 0-0 draw in a KwaZulu-Natal Derby.
