Kaizer Chiefs pick up first win of the season at Cape Town City

Kaizer Chiefs picked up their first win of the season at Cape Town City on Wednesday as goals from Siphiwe Tshabalala and debutant Wiseman Meyiwa guaranteed a 2-0 victory, while Bidvest Wits were stunned 3-1 at home by Golden Arrows.

The win takes Chiefs up to ninth on four points after three matches, while Cape Town City - who had won their opening two matches - missed the opportunity to take top spot from Maritzburg United and drop to fourth.

Benni McCarthy's Blue and Gold Army had been in imperious form heading into this encounter, but Chiefs enjoyed arguably the best of the first half, with Bhongolwethu Jayiya slamming an effort against the woodwork 10 minutes before the break.

The visitors opened the scoring soon after half time when Tshabalala held his nerve inside the box and sent a fine effort into the net, beating ex-Moroka Swallows stopper Sage Stephens.

Amakhosi doubled their lead 10 minutes from time as teenage midfielder Meyiwa marked his introduction to PSL action with a composed finish into the bottom corner.

While 17-year-old Meyiwa was the hero of the hour, Chiefs owed the points to Itumeleng Khune as well, with the Bafana Bafana stopper delivering an outstanding showing between the sticks, particularly as the hosts upped the ante in the final half an hour.

First he denied Sibusiso Masina midway through the second half, and also kept the scores level 23 minutes from time when he twice blocked Lehlohonolo Majoro efforts in close succession.

Over in Johannesburg, Wits' troubled start to the season continued as they were defeated 3-1 following goals from Lerato Lamola, Zolani Nkombelo and Nduduzo Sibiya.

The two sides went in level at the break after Amr Gamal broke his duck for the home side, cancelling out Lamola's opener.

However, Nkombelo restored the visitors' lead with a powerful effort on the counter, before Sibiya killed the contest at the death.

The win takes Arrows up to sixth on five points as their unbeaten start to the campaign continues, while Wits are down in 14th, one of four teams yet to win during this nascent PSL season.
