Sorry Chiefs beaten by Wits, Sundowns ease to victory

Kaizer Chiefs' woes continue after they were beaten 3-1 by BidVest Wits in the Absa Premiership on Tuesday night, another demoralising defeat for the ailing Soweto giants.

Chiefs had hoped for a 'new dawn' under Italian coach Giovanni Solinas, but there was little sign of that against a much-changed Wits side who now have a full haul of six points from their first two games of the season.

Defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns also claimed victory with a 2-0 success at Polokwane City, though it is a win that could come at some cost after Uganda international goalkeeper Denis Onyango left the field in an ambulance after a nasty collision in the first half.

Chiefs started their season with a 1-1 draw at Sundowns on Saturday, but were always second best against a lively Wits side.

They fell behind to a 35-yard screamer from Namibia international Deon Hotto, newly arrived at Wits from Lamontville Golden Arrows, though Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune should have done better despite the swerving, dipping ball.

Chiefs equalised when Bernard Parker's free-kick was headed into the net by Colombian forward Leonardo Castro as he flicked the ball over Wits keeper Darren Keet.

Zimbabwe forward Terrence Dzvukamanja scored his first goal in South Africa with a fine header at the back post from Sifiso Hlanti's cross to restore the Wits lead, before Gift Motupa netted his first goal for The Clever Boys after being played in by the superb Hotto.

Chiefs had the lion's share of possession after that, but they failed to create much in the way of clear-cut chances and slipped to a first loss of the season.

Next up for them is an MTN8 quarterfinal against Free State Stars on Saturday, a game that is already looking like a must-win for Solinas.

Sundowns were always in command of their win in Polokwane in a game that started 10 minutes late due to floodlight issues.

The Brazilians hit the front as their Brazilian defender Ricardo Nascimento scored a second goal of the season following his penalty at the weekend, this time a fine header from an Oupa Manyisa corner.

Onyango was forced off deep into first half injury-time after a sickening collision that saw an ambulance come onto the field and load him directly into the back for a trip to the hospital, a sight that is rarely seen in football.

It appeared as though the elbow of City striker Mbulelo Wagaba caught him flush in the face, though Sundowns later tweeted that he was stable in hospital and undergoing various tests.

Sundowns doubled their advantage early in the second period when new signing Lebohang Maboe scored his first goal for the club, heading home a ball from another new-boy, left-back Lyle Lakay.
